What’s Softdawgs.org?
Mare Shey was Founder/Executive Director of Softdawgs, a non-profit volunteer group that was dedicated to the education of responsible dog-ownership in Bend, established in 1998. Softdawgs’ leading accomplishments included the 2000 “De-Poop-Da-Park” dog waste pickup educational campaign (the poster and TV commercial, designed by Paul Evers Design, were winners of a 2nd place National “Addy” award and a 1st place Pacific Northwest “Addy” award) and the 2003 “Responsibly Leashing Your Dog” educational campaign. Having been instrumental in the establishment of Bend’s original off-leash parks (there are currently seven off-leash areas in the city) and highlighting dog responsibility in Bend, Softdawgs scaled back its community involvements and ceased operations.

Mission:
Softdawgs was a volunteer group that started in Bend in 1998 due to an increase in dog issues in our community and a desire to be proactive about future problems. Softdawgs’ mission was to educate dog owners about responsible dog stewardship in order to keep Bend a dog-friendly city, and to enhance the human/canine bond through outdoor activities. The volunteer group’s goals were to advocate towards a better understanding of dogs, dog training, healthcare, and dog-related conflicts. Softdawgs proactively educated the dog-owning public through monthly meetings, monthly park clean-ups, and special events. Softdawgs also participated in a partnership with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
