About Kay Laurence

Kay Laurence with dogKay's life with dogs began in 1973 with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

"You'd better take that to training class," was her father's first remark, initiating a 30 year career in dogs and training. From Cavaliers Kay began breeding Gordon Setters. Then Border Collies arrived to organize the household. Kay has reared a total of 24 litters of all three breeds under the GenAbacab kennel name, with the collies now spanning 9 generations.

Kay has worked as an air traffic controller at Heathrow Airport, has managed a Welsh hill sheep farm, and now teaches Adult Education courses at a British college. The dogs were a constant thread. In the early '70s she competed on the national level in Obedience with some Working Sheepdog Trials to extend the horizons. Sheep farming brought her a deep understanding of the evolved instincts of Border Collies. Kay undertook Search and Rescue training with her Gordon and learned great respect for their hunting skills-and for their desire to bounce on casualties.

Heelwork to Music and Freestyle competitions became available in the '90s. Kay began the new organization Paws N Music and spent many happy moments partnering the very well-known performer Mary Ray in pairs competitions, and creating new moves and ideas for Mary's Crufts invitational performances. Success in these sports, together with 25 years running classes in pet, sports, and working training, led to post-graduate qualifications in teaching and course design.

Kay has designed and taught several new college courses covering many aspects of dogs, from training, behaviour, psychology, history, care and welfare as well as courses for Teaching People Teaching Dogs. She now runs her own business, Learning About Dogs which organizes conferences, offers a variety of courses, and publishes Teaching Dogs magazine and several books and videos on clicker training. She has designed a series of competency tests for clicker trainers and is the inventor and initiator of the exciting new sport of Clicker Challenges, now holding regular events in the UK. Kay Laurence regularly holds workshops in Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and across the USA. She loves spreading enthusiasm for clicker training and encouraging people to want to learn more.
